About This Website

This website is jointly sponsored by the Portage Route Chapter of the Lewis and Clark Trail Heritage Foundation and the Lewis and Clark Honor Guard. It has been developed to keep people who are interested in Lewis and Clark abreast of events in our region, particularly the Portage Route Chapter and the Lewis and Clark Honor Guard. We will function as a portal for the Lewis and Clark community by providing access to Lewis and Clark Interpretive Association, Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center and other relevant groups.

We trace our roots back to the mid 1800s when travelers through the area made comments in their reports, journals and letters about things they saw that the Expedition had written about. Our aim is to build on our legacy by presenting articles, essays and opinions of people in our area as well as readers of this website that are interested in Lewis and Clark. We want to stimulate open, constructive discussion on anything related to the Lewis and Clark Expedition. There are no subjects that are “sacred cows” or “taboo;” varying points of view are welcomed.

We view ourselves as a link between informal discussions and scholarly informative articles such as those found in the Lewis and Clark Trail Heritage Foundation’s publication, “We Proceeded On.” We want this website to be a two-way communication opportunity for people interested in Lewis and Clark, whether the details of the expedition or the aftermath and its consequences. History does not “happen” one subject at a time. History is a mixed series of events, many of which are interrelated. Therefore we welcome discussion about any aspect of history that is related to Lewis and Clark

Readers will find a series of questions that are designed to stimulate thought and further exchanges of ideas. We invite written response to these questions or others our readers want to contribute.

We solicit writings for anyone who is so inclined to submit something. Submissions can be nonfiction, fiction, essays, poetry, etc, etc. See our guidelines for details.
